Variant 1
Variant 2 (start from Bagnone)
The starting point of the route is in the Filetto forest, in front of the oratory of San Genesio. From there continue southwards (clear signs) until you reach the Church of San Francesco with its admirable cloister. From the church continue in the direction of the historic center of Villafranca in Lunigiana, an important Malaspinian locality characterized by its historic bridge and the remains of the Malnido castle. From the village you go up, on an asphalted road, until you reach the place called “Piano di Virgoletta” and then the medieval village of Virgoletta, a splendid town crossed by the Via Francigena.
After passing the town and crossing the old sandstone wash houses, go up, still on an asphalted road, until you reach the provincial road which you will travel along for a short distance. Once in Vallescura, continue on a secondary road with low traffic and then turn right through a dirt and paved road that is part of the “Alta Lunigiana Castles Cycle Circuit”.
This highly scenic stretch leads to Bagnone, one of the most beautiful villages in Lunigiana. The route crosses the ancient medieval bridge and the historic center of the town, characterized by the presence of seventeenth-century arcades. Leaving the village, turn left (clear signs) and, through a steep asphalted climb, you reach the town of Nezzana and then, through a steep dirt climb, the church of San Lorenzo in Gragnana. From there you descend on an asphalted road towards Malgrate and its characteristic Castle. From here there are two possibilities:
VARIANT 1 (single track la Montada): You can go down through a challenging single track adjacent to the castle walls;
VARIANT 2: You can go down through the asphalted road.
In both cases, the route rejoins in the locality of Piano di Mocrone where, between stretches of dirt road and asphalt, it reaches the Selva di Filetto again.
